Indications/Uses
Resp tract, ENT, urinary tract, soft tissue, bone & joint, O&G infections, gonorrhoea, septicemia, meningitis. Prophylaxis against abdominal, pelvic, cardiac, pulmonary, oesophageal, orthopaedic & vascular surgery infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 750 mg tds IM or IV, for severe infections dose may be increased to 1.5 g IV tds. Infant & childn 30-100 mg/kg daily IV in 3-4 divided doses. 60 mg/kg daily may be given for most infections. Neonate 30-100 mg/kg daily in 2-3 divided doses. Gonorrhoea 1.5 g as single dose. Meningitis Adult 3 g IV 8 hrly. Infant & childn 200-240 mg/kg daily IV in 3-4 divided doses, reduced to 100 mg/kg daily IV after 3 days. Neonate Initially 100 mg/kg daily IV, may be reduced to 50 mg/kg daily as indicated. Prophylaxis 1.5 g IV w/ anaesth induction.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins, patients concurrently treated w/ potent diuretics. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Rashes, GI disturbances, transient pain at inj site, thrombophlebitis.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid.
